Independent data sources show cracks in state Covid-19 data

A comparison of independent data sources including deaths among the Muslim population and data released by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), when compared to state figures shows that there are “cracks in the data”. For example, if fatalities in the Muslim community are examined then their fatalities, which are reported independently, is 5 times that of the national average. The SAMRC data also shows that in approximately June 2020, the number of deaths or “extra deaths” far exceeded the 95% confidence level associated with the normal number of deaths in South Africa.

This implies that the official Covid-19 fatalities is probably double the global average. This is compounded by there being no flu season in South Africa this year (or other countries in the world). Typically around 5 000 people die of flu per year in South Africa, therefore making the Covid-19 data from the state more questionable.

Michael ‘O Donovan is a data scientist and demographer that has worked on the Covid-19 data since the pandemic started in South Africa.
