Dr Chris de Kock
Crime Analyst

Chris is the former head of the Crime Information Analysis Centre (CIAC) of the South African Police Service (SAPS). He holds a PhD in Sociology and has expensive experience as a researcher and analyst in crime and violence in South Africa. He is also a consultant to police services in other Southern African countries. He works with AfricaScope in the analysis of crime statistics and in the developing of crime atlases.

Michael O' Donovan
Data Scientist & Demographer

Michael is a specialist in the analysis and management of large socio-economic and political databases. He is currently a director of a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the improvement of quantitative analysis in the social sciences. He is a specialist in the use of statistical and data mining techniques. His focus areas include crime, poverty and inequality, migration, socio-economic development and political behaviour.

Prof Tom de Jong
Accessibility Modelling Specialist

Tom holds a PhD in Geography from Utrecht University in The Netherlands. He retired as assistant professor in the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University and lectures at the University of Stellenbosch. He is the original developer of the FlowMap software and is recognised as one of the leading experts in undertaking accessibility or service location modelling. He has undertaken many projects in South Africa and across the world using accessibility modeling to optimize government service and retail outlets, especially in the motor industry.

Prof Louis van Tonder
Demographer

Louis van Tonder holds a PhD in Demography from the University of Pretoria. Until his retirement he worked at Statistics South Africa and was responsible for constructing the mid-year population estimates on an annual basis. Louis assists AfricaScope in the updating of the demographic estimates for South Africa at an enumeration area level.

Frontline Market Research

Frontline is the go-to company when needing to do market research in Africa. Over many years Frontline has assisted AfricaScope in the conducting of financial access, enterprise, health facility audits, perception surveys and sexual reproductive health surveys. This has included countries like the DRC, Mozambiqie, Malawo, Tanzania, Zambia and South Africa. An area where Africascope and Frontline collaborate is in the provision of geospatial data for African countries. Frontline's retail census data for SADC countries is one of the most detailed of its kind.

Sedibeng sa Tsebo

Sedibeng is a market research company that has assists AfricaScope with the conducting of quantitative surveys and qualitative research. Projects that the two companies have worked on together include employee satisfaction survey, MSME survey in Lesotho, remittance transfers between Botswana and Zimbabwe and sexual reproductive health research in Eswatini. AfricaScope also assiusted Sedibeng in the conducting of a survey on citizen perceptions of safety and security in high crime areas in Gauteng province. Sedibeng has well trained fieldwork teams that operate in Eswatini, Lesotho and South Africa.
