Geospatial information – the foundation of tax administration in Africa

The use of geospatial data is the only way tax administration in Africa can be effectively established. A key aspect of tax administration is understanding who the taxpayers of a country are and where do they live and work. The establishment of a country’s land cadastre is key to allowing rates and taxes from occupied land to be generated, which is potentially a significant source of revenue. It is also the foundation of providing a physical address to properties in a country. With this foundation, geospatial methods can be used to optimize the provision of revenue offices and officials. This will enable African countries to contribute to the funding they need to accomplish their national development goals and the provision of physical infrastructure, schools, hospitals and clinics and other services to the people of Africa.
