Crime Atlas goes digital – Citizens have a right to know

In 2016 AfricaScope released the most comprehensive Crime Atlas of the 2015/2016 crime statistics. Information on the Crime Atlas was published widely and in

,AfricaScope has developed a digital Crime Atlas using web mapping technology (see below). The digital Atlas will provide for the first time the number of crimes per type for 2018/19 (and subsequent quarters & years) in a format that allows ordinary citizens, business leaders and safety and security structures opportunity to fully understand the crime patterns at a police precinct level.

,The Crime Atlas will allow users to search for a particular police station and view the number of crimes per type. It also allows for multiple police stations within provinces, district municipalities and local municipalities to be searched for and selected to do a comparisons.

,All crime types can be thematically mapped. The number of murders is mapped in the illustration below. By clicking on the pie slices the data can be filtered. On a secondary page, similar pie charts allow the data to be filtered further to allow an analysis of the crime statistics. As each filter is set the map and table is automatically updated. The Demo version of the digital Crime Atlas will be ,freely available to all users by the end of this week.

A more advanced version of the digital Crime Atlas will be also become available in coming weeks. This version will contain additional layers of information and indicators to explore the crime statistics for public policy and private sector strategy development.

,The purpose of the Crime Atlas is to provide crime statistics in a format that allows ordinary citizens, business leaders and safety and security structures opportunity to fully understand the crime patterns in South Africa. This is so that they can hold the SAPS and government accountable in developing strategies to bring about a sustained reduction of all crime in our country. This information is also needed in the private sector to make informed decisions in developing their risk adjusted strategies and in developing their businesses.
